Peut-être ignorez-vous que les organisations de la société civile palestinienne ont lancé un appel aux artistes pour qu’ils ne se rendent pas en Israël tant qu’il continue d’ignorer les résolutions des Nations unies, de se moquer du droit international et de priver les Palestiniens de leurs droits humains les plus élémentaires.
Peut-être ignorez-vous que ces deux dernières années, de nombreux artistes ont répondu à cet appel en refusant de paraître en Israël, et que d’autres ayant d’abord donné leur accord pour y jouer ont annulé leurs performances, ressentant qu’il était plus important de soutenir la lutte du peuple palestinien contre l’oppression israélienne.
Parmi eux, Elvis Costello, Cat Power, Roger Waters, Cassandra Wilson, Carlos Santana, Annie Lennox, Brian Eno, Massive Attack, Gorillaz, The Pixies, Tuba Skinny, Pete Seeger, feu Gil Scott-Heron, Jello Biafra… Il y a juste deux jours, le groupe irlandais Dervish s’est retiré d’une série de concerts programmés en juin en Israël, s’ajoutant aux 150 musiciens irlandais qui ont rejoint le boycott culturel.
Nous pensons que vous êtes trop intelligents pour ne pas saisir qu’aujourd’hui, jouer en Israël, c’est comme faire une déclaration politique. Votre apparition embellirait un État colonial de peuplement qui cherche toujours vigoureusement à déposséder la population indigène et à la chasser de sa terre. En y jouant, vous aideriez à camoufler les réalités brutales d’une occupation militaire cruelle et illégale.
Pour les Palestiniens, la lutte est aussi réelle qu’actuelle – une bataille quotidienne pour garder leurs terres, leurs maisons, leurs ressources et leurs espoirs. Quelle que soit votre croyance de pouvoir y aller simplement comme artistes, votre présence sera manipulée pour assurer aux Israéliens que leur impitoyable société coloniale est en quelque sorte « normale » et pour promouvoir la marque Israël à l’étranger. Vous diriez aux Israéliens et au monde que le traitement abominable des Palestiniens par Israël est acceptable. Est-ce vraiment ce que vous voulez ?
Le boycott est une forme d’action directe non-violente. Elle donne aux gens le pouvoir d’agir en faveur de la justice quand nos gouvernements y échouent. Est-il imaginable que, pendant la longue lutte contre l’apartheid sudafricain, vous y seriez allé pour jouer pour les suprématistes blancs ? Si votre réponse est Non, alors vous souhaitez déjà boycotter un système sans coeur et injuste.
Une telle « prise de position » vous met peut-être mal à l’aise ; peut-être ressentez-vous qu’elle ne colle pas avec l’esprit et les valeurs de votre travail musical. Mais en acceptant de jouer en Israël, vous prendriez déjà position.
En ce moment, plus de 1500 Palestiniens dans les prisons israéliennes – un tiers du total – sont dans une grève de la faim massive pour protester contre les détentions sans charges ni procès. Peut-être pourriez-vous vous tenir de leur côté.… Ou avec les familles palestiniennes jetées violemment de leur propre maison dans Jérusalem Est occupée, pour laisser la place à des colons juifs.… Ou avec Muhammad Hashem, 15 ans, du village de Beit Ommar, arraché de son foyer en pleine nuit par des soldats israéliens en tenue de combat pour punir son père Ahmad d’avoir organisé une résistance non-violente contre le vol en cours des terres de leur village.
Si vous jouez à Tel-Aviv, s’il vous plaît n’oubliez pas que des milliers de jeunes admirateurs palestiniens, à tout juste une demi-heure de route, n’auront pas le droit de vous écouter simplement parce qu’Israël les a confinés derrière un mur de séparation monstrueux. Cela ne va pas vous donner la nausée sur scène ? Nous pensons que cela devrait. S’il vous plaît : n’y allez pas.

Dear Red Hot Chili Peppers,
Your fans here in France are looking forward to your appearance in Paris on June 30. But we’re dismayed to learn that the organizers of your summer tour have included in your schedule a performance on September 10 in Tel Aviv.
Maybe you don’t know that Palestinian civil society organisations have appealed to artists not to go to Israel while it continues to ignore all United Nations resolutions, flout international law, and deprive Palestinians of their most elementary human rights.
Maybe you don’t know that in the past two years many artists have responded to that appeal by refusing to appear in Israel, and others who had initially agreed to perform there have cancelled their performances, feeling that it was of greater importance to support the struggle of the Palestinian people against Israeli oppression.
They include Elvis Costello, Cat Power, Roger Waters, Cassandra Wilson, Carlos Santana, Annie Lennox, Brian Eno, Massive Attack, Gorillaz, The Pixies, Tuba Skinny, Pete Seeger, the late Gil Scott-Heron, Jello Biafra… The Irish band Dervish, just two days ago, pulled out of a series of concerts programmed this June in Israel, adding to the 150 Irish musicians who have joined the cultural boycott.
We think you’re too smart not to realize that performing in Israel today is like making a political statement. Your appearance will embellish a colonial settler state still vigorously intent on dispossessing the indigenous population and driving them from their land. By playing there you’ll be helping camouflage the brutal realities of a cruel and illegal military occupation. For the Palestinians the struggle is real and present – an everyday battle to hang on to their land, homes, livelihoods, and hopes. However much you might believe you can go there simply as artists, your presence will be spun to reassure the Israeli public that their ruthless colonial society is somehow ‘normal’, and to promote Brand Israel abroad. You will be saying, to Israelis and to the world, that Israel’s abominable treatment of the Palestinians is acceptable. Do you really want to do this?
Boycott is a non-violent form of direct action. It gives people the power to act in favour of justice when our governments fail to do so. Is it conceivable that, during the long struggle against apartheid South Africa, you would have travelled there to perform for the white supremacists? If your answer is No, then you’re already willing to boycott a callous and unjust system.
You may feel uneasy about ‘taking a stand’ like this; you may feel it doesn’t go with the spirit and ethos of your music-making. But by accepting to perform in Israel, you would already be taking a stand.
Right now, over 1,500 Palestinians in Israeli jails – a third of the total – are on a mass hunger strike, in protest at detention without charge or trial. Maybe you could stand with them. Or with the Palestinian families being violently driven out of their own homes in occupied East Jerusalem, to make way for Jewish settlers. Or with 15 year old Muhammad Hashem in Beit Ommar village, dragged away from his home in the middle of the night by Israeli soldiers in full battle gear, to punish his father Ahmad for organizing non-violent resistance against the ongoing theft of their village lands.
If you perform in Tel Aviv, please don’t forget that thousands of young Palestinian fans, just a short half-hour drive away, won’t be allowed to hear you because Israel has confined them behind a monstrous separation Wall. Won’t that make you feel queasy on stage? We think it ought to. Please don’t go.
