Des citoyens israéliens à Laurent Garnier : Merci d’annuler votre concert à Tel Aviv

Cher Laurent Garnier,
Nous sommes des citoyens d’Israël critiques de et très actifs contre la politique colonialiste de notre gouvernement, l’occupation et l’apartheid envers le peuple palestinien.
Beaucoup d’entre nous sont des militants vétérans dans la campagne contre la politique de colonisation, de construction de colonies et du mur en Cisjordanie occupée.
Nous vous écrivons en soutien à l’appel palestinien pour le BDS – boycott, désinvestissement et sanctions contre les institutions israéliennes, et plus précisément l’appel aux artistes pour qu’ils renoncent à se produire en Israël [1]. Nous aimerions être sûrs que vous êtes conscients de toutes les implications morales liées au fait de se produire en Israël en ce moment. Nous vous demandons d’annuler votre concert au Bock Club, à Tel Aviv, le 27 novembre 2014.
L’Etat d’Israël a été créé en 1948 sur le nettoyage ethnique de près d’un million de Palestiniens chassés de leurs maisons [2]. L’Etat pratique une grave discrimination ethnico-religieuse contre ses citoyens non juifs [3]. De plus, le gouvernement israélien perpètre un massacre continu dans la Bande de Gaza assiégée [4], et un régime d’apartheid colonial en Cisjordanie occupée, que même les hommes politiques conservateurs en Europe en sont venus à reconnaître [5].
Le gouvernement israélien se sert ouvertement des événements culturels pour détourner l’attention de ses crimes de guerre. Pour exemple, Nissim Ben-Shitrit, ancien vice-directeur général du ministère israélien des Affaires Etrangères déclare : « Nous considérons la culture comme un outil de propagande [hasbara] de premier ordre, et je ne fais pas de différence entre la hasbara et la culture. » [6]
Voici un autre exemple, tout à fait pertinent avec votre concert : les propriétaires du Block Club à Tel Aviv sont très fiers que le ministère israélien des Affaires Etrangères utilise leur nom dans ses vidéos promotionnels : « Le Block Club est connu comme centre de culture et de musique, où des artistes internationaux de renom se produisent régulièrement. Un lieu qui est reconnu, tant en Europe qu’aux Etats-Unis, comme l’un des meilleurs nightclubs au monde aujourd’hui. A tel point que le service de la propagande au ministère des Affaires Etrangères l’a choisi pour représenter Israël dans un clip officiel pour doper le tourisme. » (Source en hébreu : [7]).
Par ailleurs, des clichés et des vidéos du chanteur et de son entourage, pendant les concerts et les visites à des sites touristiques en Israël, sont utilisées dans les campagnes internationales de marketing. [8]
Pour toutes ces raisons, par le passé, de nombreux musiciens internationaux ont annulé leurs concerts en Israël, dont Cassandra Wilson, Elvis Costello, Faithless, Gil Scott Heron, Cat Power, Stanley Jordan et beaucoup d’autres [10].
Depuis que les festivals internationaux de musique sont devenus l’une des formes les plus utilisées par Israël en matière de relations publiques, des artistes qui y ont participé ont exprimé leurs regrets après avoir eu connaissance de la situation politique ici. Deux exemples, Macy Gray and Meshell Ndegeocello [9] [10].
Compte tenu de tout ceci, nous, citoyens israéliens, vous demandons : s’il vous plaît, annulez votre concert au Block Club. S’il vous plaît, boycottez l’apartheid. Nous répondrons avec plaisir à toutes vos questions ou commentaires.

From Israeli citizens to Laurent Garnier – Please cancel your gig in Tel Aviv
23/11/2014 Dear Laurent Garnier, We are citizens of Israel who are critical of, and active against, our government’s policies of colonialism, occupation and apartheid towards the Palestinian people
In particular, many of us are veteran activists in the campaign against Israel’s illegal colonization and settlement and wall construction policies in the occupied West Bank.
We write to you in support of the Palestinian call for BDS – boycott, divestment and sanctions against Israeli institutions, specifically the call for artists to refrain from playing in Israel [1].
We would like to make sure that you are aware of all the moral implications of performing in Israel at this time.
We ask that you cancel your gig at the Block club in Tel Aviv on 27/11/14.
The State of Israel was founded in 1948 on the basis of the ethnic cleansing of nearly one million Palestinians from their homes [2].
The state practices severe ethnic-religious discrimination against its non Jewish citizens [3].
Furthermore, The Israeli government is committing an ongoing massacre in the besieged Gaza strip [4], and a colonial apartheid regime in the occupied West Bank, which even conservative politicians in Europe have come to recognize [5].
The Israeli government openly uses cultural events in order to divert attention from its war crimes. For example, Nissim Ben-Shitrit, former deputy director general of the Israeli Foreign Ministry says: « We are seeing culture as a hasbara [advocacy] tool of the first rank, and I do not differentiate between hasbara and culture » [6].
And here is another example, highly relevant to your gig: The owners of the Block Club in Tel Aviv are very proud of the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs use of their name in its promotional videos: « The Block club is known as a center of culture and music, where international artists of the first rank perform on a regular basis. A place that’s recognized, both in Europe and the USA, as one of the best nightclubs in the world today.
So much so that the Hasbara [advocacy] branch of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has chosen it to represent Israel in an official image short to boost tourism. » (Hebrew source: [7]).
Furthermore, video and stills footage of the singer and her entourage, both
during the concerts and visits to tourist sites in Israel, to be used in international marketing campaigns » [8].
Due to all this, in past years, numerous international musicians have also cancelled their performances in Israel, including Cassandra Wilson, Elvis Costello, Faithless, Gil Scott Heron, Cat Power, Stanley Jordan and many
others [10]. Since international music festivals have become one of Israel’s most commonly used forms of public relations, artists who did participate in these have expressed regret after after learning of the political situation here. Two examples are Macy Gray and Meshell Ndegeocello [9] [10].
In view of all this, we as Israeli citizens, are asking you: Please cancel your gig at the Block club. Please boycott apartheid. We will gladly address any questions or comments you may have.
