La liste s’allonge de grands artistes du monde entier qui font des déclarations claires de soutien au boycott culturel d’Israel. En cette année 2013, on a pu croiser Roger Waters, Mira Nair, Raymond Pettibon, Alice Walker, Nigel Kennedy, Sonia Montez et Iain Banks juste avant sa mort en avril.

Le plus grand syndicat étudiant canadien, celui de l’Université de York, ont rejoint BDS (en mars), suivi de ceux de l’université de Sydney, Australie (en avril), de Berkeley, Californie (en avril aussi) et de Oberlin, Ohio (en mai).
Le syndicat des enseignants d’Irlande (TUI) et celui des études asiatiques américaines (AAAS) ont aussi rejoint BDS (en avril), suivis de la Association for Humanist Sociology (AHS, en octobre), de la Native American and Indigenous Studies Association (NAISA, en décembre) et surtout de la très grande American Studies Association (ASA, en décembre aussi), l’un des événements de l’année.
Ne se sont pas produit en Israël, malgré des annonces en ce sens: Pearl Jam, Jay Z, Rage Against The Machine, Suede, Radiohead, Peter Hammill… Ont annulé leurs performances prévues en Israel en 2013 : Stanley Jordan et Kreator (janvier), Shuggie Otis (février), Richard Bona (mai), Salif Keita et Russell Brand (juin), The Killers (juillet), le Chris Daddy Dave quartet avec Pino Palladino et le Matt Schofield Trio (août).
Encore plus impressionnantes furent les annulations de festivals entiers, tels que Lollapalooza (en janvier), Plugfest (en mai) et Progstage (en novembre), suite à la défection de nombreux artistes (Azealia Banks, Lee Scratch Perry, Water Knot, CSS, 2ManyDJs, Chk Chk Chk, Tiger Love, Tinariwen, Circus Maximus, Haken, Bumblefoot…).
Dans le reste du monde, des artistes ont aussi annulé leur participation à des concerts au profit d’organisations sionistes, ou pour des raisons liées à BDS : Alexandra Burke (en Angleterre en avril), Carlo Mombelli (en Afrique du Sud en août) ou Oi Polloi (en Norvège en août)…
En mai, le célèbre professeur anglais Stephen Hawking a annulé sa participation à une conférence en Israel, point d’orgue de l’actualité BDS cette année. En juin, la grande cinéaste indienne Mira Nair a annulé la sienne à un festival de cinéma. Enfin, en décembre, Alessandro Portelli (Italie) et Mary Marshall Clark (USA) ont annulé leur participation à la Oral History Conference à l’université Hébraïque de Jérusalem…

« When I choose to cancel the Tel Aviv show, it is because dialogue has failed. In fact, it has been abused for decades. A discourse of peace has served as a thick veil, concealing what has only recently begun to dawn on the rest of the world: there is no connection between talk and action. The Gaza siege, the fragmentation of the West Bank and the discrimination of Arab-Israeli citizens continue in spite of dialogue, in spite of peace talks and in spite of all agreements. I fear that encouraging ‘understanding’ and ‘dialogue’ as ideals, is in reality to insist on the hope of empty words. I fear that a boycott of Israel is the only way to force a connection between what is being said and what is being done.
For a musician it is a painful decision to cancel a concert. For one whose life consists of talking and singing, silence hurts more than anything. I also disappoint my listeners in Israel, and the wonderful people who have been preparing this show for months. But I can’t help it. For now, I choose to encourage a real political dialogue and as long as that lasts, a halt to the expansion into occupied areas. One day in the future, when dialogue is an instrument to solve problems rather than cover them up, and when basic human rights are granted to all citizens, I hope to carry through with my very first concert in Israel. Until then, silence is the loudest song that I can sing. »
