Il y a quelques jours seulement, la page Facebook du chanteur malien Salif Keita publiait une annonce indiquant son désistement pour le concert qu’il devait donner dans le cadre du festival de musique sacrée de Jérusalem. Malheureusement il semble que, soumis à de fortes pressions, il ait décidé de maintenir son concert initialement prévu et de retirer son annonce facebook. Du point de vue du Droit International, ce festival israélien ne se déroule même pas en Israël puisqu’il a lieu à la Tour de David (1), à Jérusalem Est, donc dans un des territoires arabes illégalement occupés depuis 1967 : tout un symbole puisque ce festival de musique sert donc à blanchir l’annexion de Jérusalem Est, au prix de destructions quotidiennes de maisons palestiniennes et de l’expulsion de ses habitants…
Cinq jours avant ce concert, Salif Keita compte participer à un hommage (2) qui sera rendu à Nelson Mandela le 17 août en Afrique du Sud. Nelson Mandela, qui affirmait en 1999 que « tout discours sur la paix restera creux tant qu’Israël continuera à occuper un territoire arabe ». De l’hommage à la lutte contre l’Apartheid, à la glorification de l’occupation coloniale: Salif Keita risque de faire le grand écart, et il le sait bien d’ailleurs, vu sa valse hésitation.
On a connu Salif Keita «chanteur engagé» plus courageux, et même ambassadeur pour la paix de l’union africaine, comme l’archevêque sud africain Desmond Tutu. Mais Desmond Tutu s’est engagé sans réserves aux côtés du Tribunal Russell pour la Palestine (3) et dans la campagne de Boycott, Désinvestissement et Sanctions jusqu’à la fin de l’occupation et de la colonisation (4). Nous espérons toujours que Salif Keita réponde favorablement à cet appel des Palestiniens colonisés, discriminés, occupés et réfugiés : boycott de tous les événements culturels quand ceux-ci sont organisés par des instances reliées au gouvernement israélien !

Will Salif Keita do the splits between Mandela and Netanyahu?

Just a few days ago, the Facebook page of the Malian singer Salif Keita published an announcement that he was declining to give a concert at the Sacred Music Festival in Jerusalem. Unfortunately it seems that, having come under strong pressure, he has now decided to go ahead with the concert, and the Facebook announcement has been deleted. From the point of view of international law, this Israeli festival is not even taking place in Israel, as it will be held at the Tower of David (1) situated in East Jerusalem, one of the Arab territories illegally occupied since 1967: this is highly symbolic, since the music festival only serves to whitewash the annexation of East Jerusalem, with its daily destruction of Palestinian homes and the expulsion of their inhabitants…
Five days prior to this concert, Salif Keita plans to take part in a tribute (2) to Nelson Mandela, to be held on 17 August in South Africa. Nelson Mandela, who stated in 1999 : “All talk of peace will remain hollow as long as Israel continues to occupy Arab lands”. Salif Keita risks having to do the splits if he goes from a tribute to the apartheid struggle towards the glorification of a colonial occupation. And he is no doubt well aware of that, to judge by his dithering.
We have known another, braver Salif Keita, a politically engaged artist, and an African Union peace ambassador just like the South African archbishop Desmond Tutu. But Desmond Tutu has given his unreserved support to the Russell Tribunal on Palestine (3), and to the Boycott-Divestment-Sanctions campaign until the end of the occupation and colonisation (4). We are still hoping that Salif Keita will respond positively to the appeal from the Palestinians being colonised, discriminated against, occupied and turned into refugees: a boycott of all cultural events that are organised by any bodies linked to the Israeli government !
